Lay Vicars Choral
There are six paid positions for Lay Vicars Choral (€3,000) per annum available to competent adult singers in the back row – altos, tenors and basses.
There are currently two tenor vacancies.
A small number of Choral Scholarships for Choral Scholars become available from time to time (worth €1,000 per 9 month session) to second level students under 18.
All singers interested in contributing to the work of the Cathedral should contact the Director of Music: [email protected]
The regular schedule is a rehearsal at 5.30p.m. on Friday followed by Choral Evensong at 6.15p.m. Choral Scholars/Lay Vicars will then attend the full choir rehearsal from 7.15 – 9.00p.m.
On Sundays there is a rehearsal at 10.15a.m. followed by the Choral Eucharist at 11.15a.m. until 12.15p.m. and Choral Evensong at 3.30 p.m. preceded by a rehearsal at 2.30p.m.
There are also occasional holy day services such as Ash Wednesday, St Patrick's Day and Holy Week.
Choir holidays are the months of July and August, half term in October and February and the week following Christmas and Easter.
Another important part of the choir’s routine is the regular overseas trips. These always contain a ‘fun’ element as well as music making and contribute towards the social aspect of the choir. Recently the choir has sung in several major English Cathedrals, including Ely, Rochester Salisbury and Gloucester. The Choir sang services in Exeter Cathedral after Easter in 2011.
